Five acres, 21 taps, a 1950s neon sign and a playscape — the Hill Country hang that got there first

There's a particular Friday evening out here when the Hill Country finally lets go of the afternoon heat, and the only reasonable response is a picnic table under string lights with a frozen margarita sweating in front of you. Angel's has been the answer to that question longer than most of the subdivisions around it have existed. This week it's our Featured Spot — partly because October at Angel's is stacked with live music and a pumpkin patch festival, and partly because a place this unbothered by trends deserves a look from the neighbors who drive past it twice a day.

The story. Childhood friends Mary Blumer and Sara Shulman opened Angel's Icehouse in 2004 — they'd met in high school and launched the business after navigating transitions in their personal lives. The timing looked questionable. "People thought we were crazy," Blumer told Community Impact. "[When we opened] there was not one home down here." "We've been blessed," she added. "That's why it's called 'Angel's.'" The red neon sign out front came from a Pasadena, Texas, restaurant run by a family named Angel. Within a decade the bet looked obvious instead: "We were almost too early to the party," Blumer said, pointing to roughly 500 percent population growth in the area.

What changed since is mostly a matter of scale. An early-2010s project took the bar from four taps to fifteen and added a wine list. Then came the big one: Angel's closed Jan. 3, 2023 and reopened March 31 with updated restrooms, refreshed signage, new art featuring Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, and 21 taps. That Willie art is earned, by the way. Years ago the owners realized Nelson had visited nearly every restaurant in Spicewood except theirs, so they printed T-shirts to tempt him — and about 1,300 days later he turned up on a stormy Tuesday night for dinner.

The vibe. Five acres behind a roadside building does a lot of work. There are multiple outdoor seating areas, a fenced-in playground, a dog menu, eleven televisions and live music on weekends, all spread across the property off Hwy. 71 — plus front seating the owners nicknamed the "welcoming committee," a back patio with an outdoor dance floor and stage, and games. It reads as three bars at once: families at the tables nearest the playscape, a dog-and-a-pitcher crowd mid-patio, and whoever's come for the band down front.

Go early-evening on a weekday if you want to hear yourself talk — happy hour runs 3 to 6 and the patio is yours. Go Friday or Saturday for music; bands typically start at 6 p.m.

What to order. The kitchen leans Southern comfort with a few genuinely light outliers, and portions assume you've been outside all day.

  • Tucker Plucker — $18. Chargrilled chicken breast with guacamole, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a Hawaiian bun; the sweet bun is the whole trick.

  • Bocephus — $17. Angus beef, BBQ sauce, bacon, mild cheddar, with seasoned hand-cut fries like all the burgers.

  • Black & Bleu Ribeye Salad — $22. Grilled ribeye over romaine with bleu cheese crumbles, bacon, tomatoes and green onions — steak dinner, salad alibi.

  • Ahi Tuna Bowl — $23. Seared rare and diced over vermicelli noodles with brussels, peanuts, cabbage, edamame and sriracha; the surprise of the menu.

  • Frozen Margarita — $8. Add a fruit floater for a dollar. If you're spending up, the Margarita Maravilla ($15) uses Herradura Silver, fresh-squeezed lime and orange and organic agave nectar.

Good to know. Order-online is available through Toast if you'd rather eat at home. Weekdays bring happy hour 3–6; the calendar runs Taco Tuesday starting at 11 a.m., Wine Down Wednesday at 6, Dirty Lil' Mondays at 6, and weekend sports menu specials. Two October dates to circle: the 3rd Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m., and a closure — Angel's is closed to the public from 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15 for A Kind Hart Oktoberfest, as it is tonight, Oct. 1. Bring the dog and the kids; both have their own menu or playground waiting.
