The Village Square cafe that's been pulling espresso and baking from scratch since before most of its regulars' kids could walk

Cafe Lago is the reason half of Lakeway doesn't own a coffee maker. Tucked into Lakeway Village Square off Lakeway Drive, it's been pouring lattes and plating migas longer than most of the shopping center's other tenants have existed. This week it's our coffee shop craving because it still does the two things a real neighborhood cafe is supposed to do: make good coffee and feed you like it means it.

Why it's this week's craving. Drive-thru coffee is everywhere now, which is exactly why a place like this stands out. Cafe Lago is a well-established artisanal coffeehouse and dining favorite, located in the heart of Lakeway in the Lakeway Village Square Plaza, offering gourmet breakfast and business lunch specials daily. No app, no drive-thru lane — just a counter, a kitchen, and a menu that hasn't forgotten what a quiche is.

The story. The cafe's been family-run for decades. Current owners, cousins Carleen Rubio and Miranda Valenta, took over in 2002 after the original owners retired, and have kept the little breakfast spot in its original state with a few menu additions. Its own site now puts the total run at "a well-established coffee house that has been in business for 28 years and counting." Carleen's family had deep roots in Lakeway retail already — her aunt Josephine owned the nearby Lakeway Market, where Carleen's cousin Miranda also worked — so when the cafe came up for sale it stayed in the family rather than changing hands to a stranger. There's even a quieter tradition going on the walls: a year-long waiting list for local artists to showcase their work inside.

The vibe. Small, a little worn-in, and unmistakably local. One longtime fan called it "a true locally-owned gem tucked away in Old Lakeway," and regulars on Apple Maps keep circling back to the same words — "family owned," "locally owned breakfast and lunch place" — because that's exactly what it feels like walking in. It's busy at peak breakfast hours (expect a wait on weekends), with both indoor seating and a patio, so budget for a slow morning rather than a grab-and-go stop.

What to order. This is a from-scratch kitchen, not a pastry case with a coffee machine bolted on. Start with the Cafe Lago Migas ($12.59), eggs scrambled with cheese, peppers, onion, tomato and avocado over corn tortillas. The Potato Head ($11.99) — home fries with vegetables and ham, two fried eggs, toast on the side — has outlasted plenty of menu trends for a reason. On weekends only, there's a proper Traditional Eggs Benedict ($14.99) with hollandaise and home fries. For lunch, the Cafe Lago Club ($12.99) stacks turkey, ham and bacon, or go lighter with the Curry Chicken Salad sandwich ($10.59), chutney, celery and raisins included. And don't skip the coffee itself — lattes, cappuccinos and mochas alongside drip, best paired with whatever's come out of the pastry case that morning.

Good to know. Kitchen hours run breakfast-through-early-afternoon only, so this isn't a dinner option — plan a slow breakfast or a working lunch instead. The cafe serves breakfast seven days a week and lunch every day except Sunday. Catering is also available for offices and private events, including trays of sandwiches, quiches and pastries.
