A boutique hotel, a market and a restaurant have been promised since the Mekulys bought the lot — but there's been no public update in 2026
If you've walked the Square lately, you've probably glanced at the empty lot at 320 Wimberley Square and wondered what happened to it. That's the old Cypress Creek Café site — the beloved restaurant and Buzzard Bar that burned in a kitchen fire in the early morning hours in 2017, in a building that had stood since 1937. The lot has sat empty ever since, and as of this month there's still no groundbreaking, no opening date and no new name on the restaurant.
What's coming. The new owners plan to build a restaurant, a boutique hotel and a specialty grocery store on the property where the Cypress Creek Café and Buzzard Bar stood until it burned in an early morning fire in 2017, with the fire having left little more than a stone façade. The boutique hotel will be named The Lane House after the original builder, and the grocery store will be called Forister's Market — but the name of the restaurant remains undecided. The names are a nod to the property's deep roots: a beloved landmark for 88 years, the property at 320 Wimberley square was the popular "Dinner Bell" restaurant before becoming the Cypress Creek Café.
Where and when. The project sits right on the Square, at the same address Wimberley regulars remember. Plans call for a total building footprint of 18,000 square feet, accommodating a "gourmet market" grocery store, a 20-room boutique hotel, a restaurant, a covered sidewalk area and approximately 40 parking spaces. The old façade didn't survive the rebuild — the facade of the former Cypress Creek Cafe was demolished overnight in January 2025, with a demolition permit issued by Wimberley city staff for the building at 320 Wimberley Square — but the team salvaged what they could: Mekuley aims to preserve the charm that the city is known for, noting that during the demolition of Cypress Creek Café, they saved stones to incorporate into the property's façade. No construction timeline or opening date has been made public.
Who's behind it. Mekuley is the owner of three Wimberley establishments — Community Pizza and Beer Garden, a bar named The Let Go and the recently opened Nada Mucho Tex-Mex Heaven. He and his wife bought the property directly from the prior owner — purchased Dec. 31 by Michael and Morgan Mekuly, owners of Community Pizza and Beer Garden, The Let Go, and the soon-to-open Nada Mucho Tex-Mex Heaven, from owner Grady Burnette of Grady Burnette Builders. Their stated reasoning for the historic names: "We care very much about the building's history and the heritage it leaves behind."
What we don't know yet. No restaurant name, menu, hours, or construction start date has been announced. The permitting and demolition work took place back in early 2025, and there's been no further public filing, social post, or press update since — which is why this one's still sitting in our "still on the board" file. We don't know if the hotel, market and restaurant will open together or in phases, and we don't have a contact number or website for the project itself yet. We'll update this post the moment that changes.
