Sometimes the best restaurant finds are the ones tucked away where you might not expect them. ANHELO BISTRO RESTAURANT is one of those spots—a warm, intimate bistro on San Pedro Avenue serving a menu that travels from Latin America to Europe and beyond.

And the name tells part of the story.

Anhelo is Spanish for a deep longing or desire. For owners Maria and Chef Romer, opening the restaurant was exactly that—a dream carried through years of long shifts and kitchens before finally becoming their own table in San Antonio. Today, Romer shares the kitchen with Chef Juan Luis, whose background in Peru and Ecuador brings a particular focus on seafood and ceviche, while Romer draws on years spent cooking in Spain to bring European influences to the menu.

Your Angelo Ribs — slow-cooked for 36 hours.

THE VIBE

Think cozy neighborhood bistro meets date-night hidden gem.

Anhelo feels polished enough for an anniversary or celebration without becoming overly formal. The smaller, intimate setting, thoughtful presentation and international menu make this the kind of place where dinner feels like an occasion—even if the occasion is simply that you found somewhere new.

The philosophy here is refreshingly straightforward: fresh ingredients, food made from scratch and genuine hospitality.

MUST-ORDER ITEMS

Anhelo Ceviche — White fish with leche de tigre, pickled carrots, crispy corn, cilantro and sesame oil, served with plantain chips. With Chef Juan Luis' Peruvian and Ecuadorian background, ceviche is a natural place to start.

Eggplant & Goat Cheese Ravioli — Truffle butter, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil and shaved Parmesan. Rich, comforting and a great example of the European side of Anhelo's menu.

Caribbean Chicken & Shrimp — Coconut milk and red curry sauce with green beans and broccolini, served with jasmine rice. This one captures the restaurant's international approach in a single plate.

Your Anhelo Ribs — Pork ribs slow-cooked for 36 hours and served with your choice of jasmine rice, roasted potatoes or house salad.

And save room for the Basque Cheesecake. You can get it topped with mixed berries or Nutella—which is really the sort of decision we support making at the table rather than in advance.

WHAT WE'RE SIPPING

Cocktail people shouldn't skip straight to the wine list. Anhelo has a surprisingly fun lineup, including a Pisco Sour, Smoked Old Fashioned, Carajillo and several house margaritas.

Our eye immediately went to The Day Spa—a cucumber-and-lime tequila cocktail—or, for the bourbon crowd, that Smoked Old Fashioned.

PRO TIP

Go hungry and share.

Anhelo's menu jumps from ceviche and carpaccio to handmade-style pastas, risotto, seafood, steaks and slow-cooked ribs. Instead of everyone ordering one entrée and calling it a night, start with a couple of appetizers for the table and explore a few different sides of the kitchen.

And don't overlook the ceviche. With one chef bringing years of experience from Peru and Ecuador and another bringing European technique from Spain, the contrast between the Latin American and European dishes is really what makes Anhelo interesting.
