A Bee Cave institution that never left Highway 71 — and never needed to
Drive west on 71 past the newer patios and the wine bars, and there's still a low, unfussy building where the parking lot fills up by 11:30 and the smell of chili gravy hits before you're out of the car. That's Rosie's — same family, same recipes, same stretch of highway it's called home since Nixon was in office. In a corridor that reinvents itself every few years, Rosie's Tamale House is the fixed point everyone measures against.

The story. Rosie and Joe Arriaga started their business in 1973 out of an old gas station on Highway 71 and 620 in Bee Cave, Texas, with a countertop of four barstools and two tables, before Rosie's expanded into six dining rooms eleven years later. They lost their lease in 1984 and were able to move a quarter-mile west of the intersection to their present location on Highway 71 — two large dining rooms that now seat around 200 people. The recipes have a split parentage: the restaurant's recipes came from Joe, but the signature dish — the tamales — came from Rosie's mother, according to Rosie's son Vincent, who's run day-to-day operations for years. The menu has expanded to include popular dishes like quesadillas, after starting out serving "authentic Mexican food."
It's not just family lore — it's on the walls. The dining room is hung with decades of regulars' photos and, per Vincent, even a visit from Rick Perry, started simply because loyal customers asked why their pictures weren't up there too.
The vibe. Walk in and it reads exactly like what it is: a roadhouse dining room that hasn't chased a remodel. One longtime visitor summed it up as a spot that's "rustic and straight forward," "rather stuck in time," a place with the kind of charm where "you can go in your leggings and shorts." Linoleum, laminate tables, a wall of memories — it's unpretentious on purpose. Breakfast brings the quietest, most local crowd; lunch and dinner fill fast with families and old-timers who've been coming since the first gas-station days. Since there's no bar, the custom is simple: Rosie's has never sold adult beverages, but everyone is welcome to bring their own. Locals lean into it — regulars have made Tuesday and Saturday evenings a standing BYOB ritual around the kitchen's fajita specials.
What to order. Tamales are the name on the sign, but the kitchen's been a full Tex-Mex machine for fifty years, and the breakfast menu is its own reason to set an alarm. Go hungry — portions here don't play games.
- Rosie's Pork Tamales — the original, Rosie's fabulous pork tamales, gluten free, wrapped in dozens or half dozens.
- Enchilada Dinner (#5) — two enchiladas, your choice of cheese with chili con carne, beef with chili con carne, or chicken with verde or Spanish sauce, $15.20.
- Three Crispy Tacos — beef or chicken, topped with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese, served with rice and beans, $14.45.
- Migas Taco — the Roadfood pick, scrambled eggs, melted cheese and broken-up bits of corn tortilla, a great way to start the day.
- Large Chili Con Queso (16 oz) — a generous serving of creamy melted cheese with a robust blend of chilies, $11.00, built for the table.
Good to know. No liquor license — bring your own if you want a beer or margarita with dinner; the kitchen has no issue with it. Hours have shifted across sources over the years, but Rosie's own site lists takeout hours as Monday 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m., closed Tuesday, and Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m. — worth a quick call if you're planning an early breakfast run, since older write-ups also describe a 6 a.m. opening on non-Tuesday mornings. Either way, Tuesday is a hard closure. Parties and catering are handled in-house. Lunch and dinner get busy, especially weekends, so expect a short wait if you roll in right at noon or 6.
