Prime steaks, A5 Wagyu and a patio that times itself to the sunset over the water

Some nights call for queso and a patio beer. Other nights call for a reservation, a bottle of wine and a view that does half the talking for you. Steiner Ranch Steakhouse is built for the second kind of night — a three-story dining room on a ridge above Lake Travis, with the kind of sunset that makes even a random Tuesday feel like an occasion.

Why it's this week's craving. This is the spot locals save for anniversaries, proposals and the nights when "let's just grab something" isn't going to cut it. Steiner Ranch Steakhouse is a 14,000 sq ft restaurant built in the hill country overlooking Lake Travis, and it has three levels, four bars, and a large outdoor dining area with breathtaking views. Add live music on the patio and the romance is more or less built into the architecture.

The story. The restaurant opened in 2008, and over the years has added a smokehouse, a sun room and a large patio with a live entertainment stage. The place leans hard into its roots — it sits on land once home to rodeo horses and cattle, and invites guests to experience a century of rodeo, ranching and fine dining cuisine. That ranching history isn't just a tagline inside; the dining rooms are full of saddles and old photos from the family behind it, so you're eating steak in what amounts to a small rodeo museum with a hell of a view.

The vibe. This is dress-up-a-little territory — white tablecloth energy without being stuffy, and a mix of intimate indoor dining and a lively patio with live music, soft lighting and a pleasant buzz that makes it a go-to for celebrations. Go right before sunset if you want the full effect: golden light on the water, a band warming up on the patio, servers who've clearly done this a thousand times for a thousand anniversaries.

What to order. The kitchen's calling card is USDA Prime Steaks, Premium A5 Wagyu, fresh seafood, and an extraordinary wine collection — but a few things worth flagging by name. Start with the Stuffed Avocado, a tortilla-crusted half avocado loaded with smoked pulled pork, chipotle crema and cotija. For the table, the She Crab Soup or a classic Wedge Salad with bacon and bleu cheese dressing. For the main event, the Filet Mignon (7oz or 10oz) or the "Cowboy" Ribeye, a 22oz bone-in cut that's built for sharing — or splurge on the Chilled Seafood Tower for two if you want to start the night at full tilt. Save room for the Lobster Mac & Cheese on the side; it shows up in enough reviews to count as a house specialty.

Good to know. Reservations matter here, especially on weekends and around sunset — this isn't a walk-in-and-hope kind of place on a Friday night. Dinner runs Mon–Thu 4:00 pm–9:00 pm (note: current hours list 10 pm, see below), Fri and Sat 4:00 pm–11:00 pm, Sun 2:00 pm–10:00 pm, with Happy Hour Mon–Fri and Sun 4:00 pm–6:00 pm. There's also a well-regarded Sunday brunch buffet. Live music runs on the patio seven days a week, so the date-night soundtrack is pretty much guaranteed. Private dining is available too, if the special occasion is bigger than a table for two.
