A restored Vietnamese town hall, creekside candlelight, and a menu that wanders the globe

Some restaurants are a meal. Tillie's is an event. It sits inside Camp Lucy, the wedding-and-wellness resort off Creek Road, in a dining room built from turquoise doors that open to a colorful chapel-like space framed by soaring ironwood rafters that were originally part of a 19th-century town hall from the Ninh Binh region of Vietnam. You drive out past the gate expecting Hill Country rustic and land somewhere between Saigon and a European chapel instead — which is exactly the point.

Why it's this week's craving. Date night needs a little theater, and Tillie's has it built in: candlelight, a working vineyard outside the windows, and a room that still gets written up for its architecture years after opening. It's the kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel planned, even when it wasn't.

The story. The family planned to add a pool with a simple adjacent hamburger stand, but the discovery of the town hall made their restaurant plans much more ambitious — Tillie's opened in October 2018, named for Whit's great-grandmother, Attila Hancock. The kitchen's approach has stayed consistent since: a seasonal menu described as American Nouveau cuisine, infusing familiar dishes with innovative international flavors, anchored in America but spanning the globe with dishes that borrow from Italy, Spain, France, Japan, India and beyond. Executive Chef Andy Knudson runs the kitchen now, and reviewers keep coming back for the same reason — a dining room that somehow still surprises people who've been going for years.

The vibe. Think dressed-up-but-not-stiff. Tables are spaced for actual conversation, service leans attentive without hovering, and the setting does a lot of the romantic heavy lifting on its own — this is a place people specifically mention for anniversaries and "we're staying the night" occasions, not quick dinners. Guests describe the repurposed town-hall architecture and beautiful dining rooms as creating a calm, inviting spot that many call romantic and a lovely escape in the Hill Country.

What to order. The dinner menu changes seasonally, but a few anchors show up again and again:

  • Jumbo Crab Cake with apple gastrique and thai peanut sauce ($27)
  • Brussels Sprouts with lemongrass chili jam, thai basil, toasted almond ($18)
  • Artisan Mix Green Salad with drunken goat cheese and honey balsamic ($21)
  • Housemade Focaccia with whipped butter ($14)
  • A glass of the Petit Verdot, grown right there on the Camp Lucy vineyard ($15)

If you're coming for brunch instead (Saturday and Sunday), the Hill Country Chicken & Waffles and the Cinnamon Roll both have reputations that precede them.

Good to know. Reservations aren't optional here if you want a weekend slot — reservations are highly recommended, and larger parties need to call ahead. The restaurant also runs a Friday Afternoon Tea by reservation and a weekend brunch that regulars treat as its own destination.
