Luis Mendoza's barbacoa and cauliflower al pastor are parked outside Willow Lake, with a Tuesday detour to Driftwood

Un Mundo De Sabor is the taco truck that keeps showing up on best-of lists, and for the last stretch it's been working a semi-permanent spot outside Willow Lake Watering Hole & Mercantile in downtown Wimberley. If you've eaten at the Thicket trailer park in South Austin, this is the same truck, same chef, now splitting time in the Hill Country.

The story. Owner Luis Mendoza came up working two jobs around Austin — kolaches in the morning, sous chef shifts at La Condesa at night — before a former colleague's food truck became his own. Along with the truck, he and his partner inherited its name, and the new Un Mundo de Sabor opened in December 2020. It wasn't an easy start, but Mendoza's perseverance paid off, and Un Mundo de Sabor grew into one of Austin's best taco trucks. It was voted best new restaurant by Austin Monthly in 2022, and the truck has since become a fixture far outside South Austin — Eater Austin has noted the food truck's name on Austin Monthly's list of the year's best restaurants.

The vibe. This is a truck, not a dining room — picnic tables, a bar next door, and whatever live music Willow Lake has booked that night. Willow Lake itself is part bar, part live music venue, part events center, and home to the food trucks it hosts, so expect a casual, outdoor, order-at-the-window kind of night. The same trailer also sets up at Mean Eyed Cat in Driftwood, where it serves the bar's Taco Tuesdays, with $3 tacos and $5 house margs.

What to order. The menu leans El Paso, Mendoza's hometown, and it shows in details like Muenster-topped dishes and a red chile sauce built around chile colorín. Go for the barbacoa taco, made with 44 Farms beef cheek, crushed avocado, onion and cilantro on a corn tortilla, $5.70, and the carnitas taco, Berkshire pork shoulder carnitas with pickled red onion, $5.70. Reviewers single out the campechano with griddled cheese and the barbacoa as standouts among the tacos. Don't skip the vegan cauliflower al pastor — the char and caramelization gives it a natural, pleasant chewiness, with cilantro ribbons, pineapple chunks and pickled red onion on top. For dessert, there's the Mazapan Tres Leches, sponge cake with whipped cream and macerated strawberries, $6.00.

Good to know. Prices run roughly $10–20 a head, this is cash-and-card food truck ordering (there's also an online-order link through the truck's site), and the schedule moves around with bookings at both Willow Lake and Mean Eyed Cat — worth a quick Instagram check before you drive over, especially since it isn't there every single day of the week.
