Pizza, tacos, live music, and a patio that doesn't mind if you stay all night
There's a particular kind of relief that sets in when you turn off Old Kyle Road and see the string lights already on. Willow Lake has become the place where a Wimberley week exhales — close enough to the Square to walk, loose enough that nobody's watching the clock, and stocked with two kitchens so the group text about where to eat never has to end in a compromise. This week it's also hosting the valley's first chili cook-off, which feels about right for a spot that's spent the last year quietly becoming the town's default Friday.

The story. The name has deeper roots than the Wimberley location lets on. In 1973, Lonnie Glasscock opened the original Willow Lake in Old San Patricio, Texas, not far from Corpus Christi, with the goal of a vintage Texas bar that welcomed all — at one point it carried the largest beer selection in the state and grew into an icon for music, drinks, food and good times. Today that legacy continues in Wimberley, as his daughter has re-created the magic that made the original a Texas treasure. It's why this Saturday's chili cook-off carries real weight beyond the trophy: the event is run in honor of Lonnie and his wife Nuccia, who got the whole chili-and-music tradition started decades before a Hill Country creek town ever got its own version.
What's changed more recently is the food. Willow Lake was always a bar first — part lively bar, part live music venue, part events center, and home to award-winning food trucks — but the current setup, with an in-house pizza window and a dedicated taco trailer parked permanently out front, turns a one-drink stop into a full dinner plan. It's the kind of addition that doesn't announce itself with a ribbon-cutting; it just quietly makes a Tuesday night at the bar into a reason to bring the kids and call it dinner.
The vibe. This is a yard first, building second. Guests describe a rustic and peaceful atmosphere that feels like being back at camp, which tracks — string lights through the trees, a creek somewhere behind the noise, and enough open lawn that a crowd never feels stacked on top of itself. Inside leans cozy and a little dressed-up for a honky-tonk, the kind of place one bride called "sooo cozy" with "great decor" on her wedding night there. The crowd skews a little older on weeknights and fills in with every generation once a band takes the stage — dogs underfoot, kids on the lawn, and regulars who clearly have a seat they consider theirs. Go on a Wednesday for Molly's free Music Bingo if you want elbow room; go on a weekend if you want the full roar, since the lineup runs essentially nonstop with touring blues and Americana acts most Fridays and Saturdays.
What to order. The move here is to split a table between the two kitchens rather than pick a side. The pizza comes from the window menu, the tacos from Un Mundo De Sabor's trailer out front — order both and let the table decide.
- Sausage and Honey Pizza ($16) — Italian sausage, sautéed onion, mozzarella, goat cheese, and honey; the one regulars steer newcomers toward.
- Garlic and Arugula Pizza ($16) — roasted garlic, mozzarella, goat cheese, arugula, and balsamic glaze over red sauce.
- Meat Pizza ($16) — bacon, pepperoni, and Italian sausage for the table that doesn't do subtlety.
- Veggie Pizza ($14) — kalamata olive, roasted red pepper, and spinach.
- Un Mundo De Sabor tacos — the trailer's own menu, best paired with Taco Tuesday pricing below.
Wash it down with a Damn Good Old Fashioned or a frozen margarita off the drink menu, and don't skip the shaded patio tables if the weather's cooperating.
Good to know. Guests can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere by the creek while savoring drinks and browsing curated goods at the on-site mercantile, and the spot is pet friendly with outdoor dining and on-site parking. This Saturday, October 10, is the first-ever Wimberley Chili Cook-Off & Music Fest: gates open at 8 a.m., chili fires light at 9, tasting starts at noon ($20/person, proceeds benefiting Camp CommUnity), the Red River Shootout airs on the big screen at 2:30, and the music runs through Ruben V at 6 and headliner West Texas Exiles at 9. Monday is all-day happy hour (a dollar off everything), and Tuesday pairs any Un Mundo taco with a $4 Dos Equis or $5 margarita. Sunday nights bring a service-industry special after 8 p.m. Large groups and private events are welcome on the pavilion — worth a call ahead if you're planning something bigger than a regular table.
